Cliff Karl is an engineer leading both manufacturing and product design across medical devices, automotive, and machinery.
His professional yet friendly approach defines his leadership style, he combines a sense of urgency with a touch of humor.
He has high energy—his time in the gym and bicycling keep him full of drive, bringing that same intensity to projects.
Cliff's manufacturing background is robust. He has a good grasp of many processes, one of which is injection mold process engineering with scientific molding. He prepares process FMEAs to manage risks. His experience encompasses mold making, thermoplastics, LSR, and sourcing injection molds in both the USA and China. Previously, he was hands-on with CNC, EDM and CMM. He has led supplier audits and been involved in machine design, fixture design, and assembly lines. His commitment to quality includes supplier quality engineering (SQE), and he has experience with CAPA, NCMR, 5S, and 8D. He has worked with FDA IQ/OQ/PQ and ISO 13485 standards.
In the realm of product design, Cliff has experience developing plastic products, such as single-use medical devices. He employs SolidWorks 3D CAD and 2D dimensioned drawings. His areas of expertise include tolerance analysis and the design of electromechanical medical instruments. Cliff performs design FMEAs, a practice crucial for safety. He has presented R&D product concepts to doctors via focus groups in formal observation room settings. He has been to the NIH to meet with doctors and has interviewed nurses at hospitals to identify and implement solutions.
Project management is another area Cliff focuses on. He utilizes MS Project and encourages tight team collaboration. As an engineer with Fortune 500 companies, he has traveled to supplier sites to resolve issues.
Cliff's international experience highlights flexibility and cultural awareness. He has worked in Mexico and has spent time in China, both living and working there. With some Mandarin Chinese skills, he can function in non-English environments.
Building on a Bachelor of Science in engineering and a technical designer certificate, Cliff has progressed through a series of roles, including R&D Engineer, Supplier Quality Engineer, Tool Shop Manager, Molding Manager, Engineering Manager, and Engineering Director.
Based in Columbia, South Carolina, and Shenzhen, China, Cliff's proximity to the airport is convenient for travel to client sites, or he can work remotely. He is dedicated to the success of each project, aiming to provide his clients with results that meet the highest standards.
