Cliff Karl is an engineer with a strong focus on both precision manufacturing and product design, characteristics that have been a hallmark of his work across various industries including medical devices, automotive, and machinery.
Cliff's manufacturing background is robust. He has a good grasp of injection mold process engineering and scientific molding, and he prepares process FMEAs to manage risks prudently. His practical experience encompasses mold making, previously programmed and operated CNC and EDM, thermoplastics, liquid silicone rubber (LSR), the adoption of RJG standards, and sourcing injection molds in both the USA and China. He has lead supplier audits and has been actively involved in machine design, fixture design, and the establishment of assembly lines. His commitment to quality is evident in his efforts of supplier quality engineering, where he has experience with CAPA, NCMR, 5S, 8D, and has worked in accordance with FDA and ISO 13485 standards.
In the realm of product design, Cliff has experience developing a wide range of plastic products, with an emphasis on disposable medical devices. He employs SolidWorks 3D CAD and produces 2D detailed dimensioned drawings. His areas of expertise also include tolerance analysis and the design of electromechanical medical instruments. He was the inventor of several patents while working at medical companies. Cliff has met with doctors at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for new product concepts and then designed the devices. Cliff presented R&D product concepts to doctors via focus groups in formal observation room settings. He interviewed nurses at hospitals, for problem solving, to identify and implement solutions.
Project management is another skill where Cliff focuses. He utilizes Smartsheet and Microsoft Project to keep tight team collaboration. As a molding engineer with Fortune 500 companies, he has traveled to various supplier sites to tackle and resolve issues.
Cliff's international experience highlights his flexibility and cultural awareness. His work has taken him to Mexico and he has spent significant time in China, both living and working there. His Mandarin Chinese communication skills support constructive dialogue with local engineering and operations teams.
Building on a Bachelor of Science degree, Cliff has progressed through a series of roles including R&D Engineer, Supplier Quality Engineer, Tool Shop Manager, Molding Manager, Engineering Manager, and Engineering Director. His professional yet friendly approach is defining of his work style, where he combines a sense of urgency with a touch of humor.
Based in Columbia, South Carolina - as well as Shenzhen China - Cliff's proximity to the airport allows for convenient travel to client sites or he can work remotely.
